Tips for Moving Without Losing Anything

movingMoving house can be a stressful and chaotic time, but there are steps you can take to minimize the risk of losing your possessions (or your mind). Read the tips below, provided by a group of moving companies in Fort Lauderdale, Fl., and enjoy a frustration-free move.

Unfortunately, theft can occur during the moving process. Be sure to employ a trust-worthy moving company. A visit to the Better Business Bureau website will quickly reveal existing complaints against your chosen mover. Consider researching the company using other customer review websites – were others satisfied or displeased with their experience? Pack valuables before the moving company arrives, and arrange to have someone trustworthy available to supervise the movers, as they load goods from the house into the truck. Check that the movers properly secure the truck before departing.

To keep track of your boxes, number them. Use black marker on white address labels. Label the sides, not the tops, of the boxes. Add your name, and the name of the room the boxes are going to. Record the contents of each box on your own master list. On arrival at your new house, count through the boxes in sequence. It will be immediately obvious if a box has been left behind.

Keep important documents with you. Documents such as passports, medical records, school records, birth certificates, important phone numbers and bank account details should all travel on your person. Include your master list. Gather all of this information into a folder, and consider it a part of you for the duration of the move. Keep a copy of your new address and phone number in your wallet; they are surprisingly easy to forget at the end of a tiring day.

When packing electronics, it is helpful to photograph the positions of the wires before unplugging. This can save you time and frustration at your new house, when trying to reconnect. Attach small, loose parts, such as screws, to the item itself. Small plastic bags or envelopes are ideal for this purpose and can be easily taped to the base or back of an item. Tape picture hooks to the back of pictures before packing, to save time looking for a good match. Set up a bowl or bag for left over, mystery screws.

Finally, if you are a parent of a young child, give extra consideration to your child’s special toy or blanket. Of all the possible losses that could occur during a move, the loss of a loved item may have the most severe consequences for you! Purchasing a duplicate or two in advance of moving day could save you from tears and tantrums when the day finally comes. Enjoy your new home!
