Most homeowners believe their home is safe when all the doors and windows are locked. There are dangers in each home that many do not realize; some of these can be deadly. Some items may be advertised as safe and are not. Here are five dangers that could exist in your home that you may not realize exist.

Replacement Doors And Windows

Many replacement patio doors and windows are far from secure. In many new designs, it is far too easy to open a locked replacement patio door or window while it is on display in the DIY store. This can be remedied by replacing the locks with better ones before the product is installed. A security system can alert the homeowner that someone is trying to break into the home. Space Heaters

Space heaters keep rooms warm, but must be monitored. A simple bump can tip space heaters over. While many of today’s models have a cutoff feature that turns the unit off if it overheats, older units might not have one. The heat produced by the unit continues to build until the material it is up against begins to burn. A pillow, toy, piece of paper or other item leaning against a heater can also catch fire.

The Staircase

The humble staircase is one of the most dangerous places in your home. Nearly a million people a year visit emergency rooms because of falls and sprains because of stairs. Loose carpeting, stair treads, items placed on stairs, trying to ascend or descend too quickly are all common causes of falls. Carrying bulky loads that obscure the stairs or your feet is another common cause of falls.

The Bathtub

Bathtubs are a great place to take a bath, wash the dog or give yourself a spa treatment. Unfortunately, they are also a source of slips, falls and injuries. Small children can drown in as little as two inches of water. Scalds from hot water faucets are entirely preventable; anti-scald devices can be installed by plumbers for relatively little cost. Never leave children alone in a bathtub of water, even to answer the door or phone.

The Flower Garden

The flower garden may look beautiful all year long, but choosing the wrong plants can be disastrous. Foxgloves are stunningly beautiful in the spring time and lantana makes a great looking floral display. Foxglove produces the medicine digitalis, which is used to treat irregular heartbeats. Lantana berries are toxic and potentially deadly.
